About the work:
This installation created in 2004 for an Art Basel satellite exhibition consists of clay and an LED teletype.
Fabricated using three methods:
2- cast/ hand built on people's feet
3- from patterns made by deconstructing found originals
that are glazed, under glazed , and received multiple firings.
Intentionally Erman used the look of wear and ethnic or period footwear as an metaphor when speaking about the migratory experience. He felt the use of period styles and ethnic ones spoke to the global and common unifying use of footwear and the constant flux of humanity whether physical or spiritual
The shoes stand and wait their turn while the teletype projects snippets of conversations with a varied group of people and the artists own experiences as an immigrant.
This provenance of this piece -
was reinstalled later in 2007 for Erman's survey Cortando, Cosiendo y Recordando, which traveled to Cirado and back to
Miami in 2009.
